‘Van Lymborch’ verovert de wereld
Op 7 juni wordt de vuistdikke catalogus (540 pagina’s) gepresenteerd bij de baanbrekende expositie over de werken van de Van Lymborchs, de maandbladen uit de Très Riches Heures, de Belles Heures en Bible moralisée in Musée Condé in Chantilly. De eerste ontwerpen van Hannibal Books, vermaard uitgever van kunstboeken in Leuven (bijv. de Vermeer-catalogus, waarvan er 100.000 zijn verkocht), worden nu bekeken. Bijzonder is het Van Lymborch blauw ‘op snee’, op de zijkant van de bladzijden.
Maar dé verrassing zit binnenin, in zowel de Engelstalige als Duitstalige uitgave wordt de naam van de kunstenaarsfamilie geschreven volgens de middeleeuwse schrijfwijze in zestien bronnen in Nijmegen uit de 14e en 15e eeuw. Voor de Stichting Maelwael Van Lymborch is dit een historisch moment: de familienaam eindelijk conform de authentieke orthografie. Niet langer de verzonnen 19e eeuwse fantasiespelling Van Limburg, die nota bene in geen enkele middeleeuwse bron voorkomt. Wat in 2018 is gelanceerd door Pieter Roelofs in vol. I van de wetenschappelijke reeks Maelwael Van Lymborch Studies wordt nu wereldwijd overgenomen. Deze schrijfwijze past geheel bij de andere nieuwe baanbrekende resultaten van onderzoek. The official book accompanying the unique exhibition of the ‘Mona Lisa’ among manuscripts
The Très Riches Heures of Jean, Duke of Berry is the best-preserved and one of the most magnificently exquisitely detailed manuscripts of the fifteenth century. Handmade around 1410 for the Duke of Berry, a prominent figure in France, this Book of Hours is known as a masterpiece of international Gothic art. It combines intriguing naturalism with imaginative, lively compositions on 206 parchment pages. The famous calendar section, created by the Van Lymborch brothers, contains breathtaking monthly scenes that foreshadow the work of Jan Van Eyck and the outstanding painters of the fifteenth century in the southern Netherlands.
After careful analysis and restoration, this rare treasure will be exhibited at the Musée Condé in Chantilly. For the first and probably only time, visitors will have the chance to see the iconic calendar pages unbound and fully restored, providing a unique opportunity to experience the breathtaking beauty and historical significance of this unrivalled Medieval masterpiece.
